2009 Nike CBA Football ClassicBellevue, Wash. (August 25, 2009) - Bellevue High School announced today the schedule for its 2009 Nike CBA Football Classic, formerly known as the Best of the West. The 2009 Nike CBA Football Classic, to be held on September 18, 2009 in Marysville, WA and on September 19, 2009 at the Seattle Memorial Stadium, will bring together seven Washington teams and three California teams, including three Washington versus California match-ups. Paralleling the popularity of the weekend's Washington state versus California state college match-ups, this five-game event is expected to draw upwards of 10,000 football fans to help kick off the 2009 football season.
A week after the Bellevue High School Wolverines take on Katy High School in Katy, Texas, they will be back in the Seattle area to compete against a California elite football program, Grant High School from Sacramento, California in the 2009 Nike CBA Football Classic. This will be the Wolverines' fourth match-up against a top California team in the past five years. The Bellevue Wolverines have won the WIAA 3A state championships in six of the last eight seasons. In 2004 the Wolverines knocked the biggest king in football history from its reign, ending Concord (Calif.) De La Salle's winning streak at a record 151 games. In 2005 Bellevue followed up their monumental victory by defeating another national power, Long Beach (Calif.) Poly. The Wolverines are 4-0 against out-of-state competition under the leadership of Coach Butch Goncharoff. If Bellevue wins the September 4, 2009 game against Earl Marriott (BC) and the September 12, 2009 game against Katy High School, they will enter the 2009 Nike CBA Football Classic with a record of 6-0 against out of state teams. Bellevue's Coach Butch Goncharoff is 100-8 since taking over as head football coach in 2000. Goncharoff collected state titles in 2001, '02, '03, '04, '06 and '08 and is the first coach in state history to win four consecutive state championships.
Goncharoff said, "Our Athletic Director has helped to put together a challenging and exciting schedule for the 2009 season. This game against Grant will be noteworthy because they have an extremely talented program. They have a great coaching staff and some tremendous players. After the game, regardless of the winning team, we know that a game of enormous athleticism and determination will have been played, and a great cross-state relationship will have been formed."
During the 2008-09 football season the Grant Pacers' football team ranked first in its league at 14-0-0 and earned a number two standing overall in the state of California. Grant went on to upset California power house and the state's number one team, Long Beach Poly, in the final game of the 2008 bowl-winning season. Grant's Head Coach for over 40 years, Mike Alberghini, has coached notable NFL players such as Mike Jankowich, Onterrio Smith, Paris Warren, C.J. Wallace, and Reggie Walker.
Alberghini, said, "We are always up for a challenge and Bellevue has traditionally done well against California teams and so it was a welcomed match-up. Last year, we defeated the Idaho and Utah state champions and then we upset the number one California team in Long Beach Poly. We want to build on the excitement of last season and I'm certain that the Bellevue match will be an exhilarating one."
